April 9, 2023Security is not something that you can take for granted. It is a constant process of being aware, vigilant, and initiative taking. In this blog post, I will share some everyday steps that you can take to improve your security and protect yourself from cyber threats.
- Use strong passwords and change them regularly. A strong password is long, complex, and unique. It should not contain any personal information, familiar words, or patterns. You should also use different passwords for different accounts and services and change them at least every six months. You can use a password manager to help you create and store your passwords securely.
- Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) whenever possible. 2FA is a method of verifying your identity by requiring an additional factor besides your password, such as a code sent to your phone or email, or a biometric feature like your fingerprint or face. 2FA adds an extra layer of security and makes it harder for hackers to access your accounts.
- Update your devices and applications regularly. Updates often contain security patches that fix vulnerabilities and bugs that could be exploited by hackers. You should always install the latest updates for your operating system, browser, antivirus software and other applications that you use frequently. You can also enable automatic updates to save time and hassle.
- Avoid clicking on suspicious links or attachments. Phishing is a common technique used by hackers to trick you into revealing your personal or financial information or installing malware on your device. Phishing emails or messages may look legitimate, but they often contain spelling or grammar errors, urgent requests or offers that are too good to be true. You should always check the sender’s address, the URL of the link and the file extension of the attachment before clicking on anything.
- Use a VPN when connecting to public Wi-Fi networks. Public Wi-Fi networks are often unsecured and vulnerable to snooping and hacking. A VPN (a virtual private network) encrypts your data and hides your IP address, making it harder for anyone to track or intercept your online activity. You should use a VPN whenever you connect to a public Wi-Fi network, such as at a coffee shop, hotel, or airport.
These are some of the everyday steps that you can take to improve your security and protect yourself from cyber threats. Remember that security is not a one-time thing, but a habit that you need to practice regularly. Stay safe and secure online!
